If you haven’t seen it yet, Gowalla is a location-based iPhone app that allows you to check into spots & pick up or drop items that you collect. It’s recently become my second favorite iPhone app. I won’t go all into the details of the app here, but you can read my previous post comparing Gowalla and Foursquare.

Here are some tips or “best practices” that users can use to make Gowalla more enjoyable for everyone:

  • When creating a new spot, it’s OK if you don’t spell it correctly, put it in the wrong correct category, or if the location is off a bit. Just log into the web site when you get home and make any corrections to the name of the spot, it’s category, and it’s location on the map. I know some people might try to mark new spots while driving by them. The GPS of your iPhone might not always be accurate. Editing the spot’s location will fix that easily.
  • If the spot you’re creating is for a well known company or organization, don’t forget to spell it correctly. You can always go back & edit it if you didn’t.
  • When selecting or correcting the category, make sure you select the category that best describes the spot. Each category will sometimes give other users that check into that spot a unique item that’s associated with the category.
  • If check into a new spot that you haven’t checked into before, drop an item that’s not associated with the spot, if you have any items to drop.
  • Once you go back to edit a spot that you’ve created, don’t forget to add an interesting description for the spot. If you don’t know of anything off the top of your head, see if the spot has a web site and see if there is any interesting info there. “Food” isn’t too interesting description for a grocery store. Pretty BORING if you ask me.
  • If you are having problems, a great idea for something, or feedback, go to http://getsatisfaction.com/gowalla and say something. I have recently posted a few ideas on there. Like the Asian food should be split up into different sub-categories. Make places
easier to identify. And there is no Caribbean food category. That was posted as an idea. Or maybe there is a spot that is spelled completely wrong and the creator can’t be gotten hold of, post a new topic with the info (get the URL of the spot from your web browser) and correct info and a Gowalla employee will fix it.
  • Toll exits from highways and freeways don’t make good spots to check into. Driving while playing with Gowalla can be dangerous!
  • If you have spare items, don’t forget to drop one off at spots you check into. Even swap out items at spots. Each spot can hold up to 10 items.
  • If you need items, start checking into different spots.
  • If you come across a spot that has been created, but not founded drop an item if you have any available.
  • Not sure about what to categorize a spot, ask a fellow Gowalla user.
  • Personally, I have a thing with privacy issues, so I wouldn’t recommend creating at spot for your house.

The app is FREE from the App Store so pick it up!

Here’s the quick review after playing with Gorillacam:
Joby says it’s fast. Well, it’s not. The app takes some time to save photos that you take, even in the different modes (Time-Lapse & 3-Shot Bust modes). In the 3-Shot Burst mode, the app stopped after the second photo was taken for an additional second or two and started to saving the photos that it took, then continued to take the third photo. The different features are impressive, but I think the app overall could use some tweaking. Great user interface. I’m going to have to play with this app some more before I make my final judgement.

Electronic Arts has done it again. They’re brought a past arcade classic back for the iPhone. This time it’s the game Dragon’s Lair. Just like Space Ace, Dragon’s Lair ran off of a laser disc inside the arcade game house. You control what Dirk the Daring does and then the game jumps to the appropriate track on the laser disc and the game continues. The iPhone version will work exactly like that!

Dragon's Lair

A PAST WORTH REPEATING
Immerse yourself in the visually stunning world of hand-drawn animation adapted from the original game. Prepare yourself for an authentic arcade experience and an unforgettable adventure!

A CLASSIC TALE OF GOOD VS. EVIL
As valiant knight Dirk the Daring, your noble but precarious quest is to rescue the beautiful Princess Daphne from the lair of Singe, a fire-breathing dragon who lurks in the foreboding castle of an evil wizard!

CHALLENGES OF A PRIMITIVE KIND
Battle your way through menacing forces and bizarre monsters including The Giddy Goons and The Lizard King. Forge your way through a maze of mysterious caverns and treacherous barriers, stopping at nothing to save the fair lady.

YOU CONTROL THE STORY
Timing is everything! Quick reflexes and the right choices guide you closer to rescuing the Princess. Use your skills to safely navigate through medieval obstacles like the bone-crushing Boulder Trench and the flesh-searing Fire Room.

CHOOSE YOUR PATH
Play in Arcade Mode for all of the fun and adventure of the freestanding original. Experience the authentic laserdisc version of this fan-favorite in Home Mode and check out additional scenes.

LEAD ON, ADVENTURER…YOUR QUEST AWAITS
Go forth, Dirk the Daring, on your perilous journey and be the hero you were born to be!

You can get Dragon’s Lair for $4.99 from the App Store.

No. Don’t stalk them! Leave them alone. But if you go to Hollywood and want to take a tour of the houses of the stars, you can use the new Celeb Star Map app to do so. For $4.99 at the App Store, you can avoid paying those high prices for the folded up paper maps they sell everywhere in the Hollywood area or paying more for riding into those tour buses that work on their own schedule, not yours.

star_maps

Celeb Star Map is made by bc interactive (Guys, fix your web site!). From the screenshots, I can see that it has an easy-to-use interface, accessing Wikipedia & Google Maps and has a quick search features that help you locate all of your favorite celebrities homes.

Celeb Star Map features:

  • Quickly locate all celebrities in your area with a single click.
  • Find exactly where your favorite celebrity lives with our celebrity database.
  • View extended information on every celebrity in our database including career notes and personal life notes.
  • Also browse the hottest bars, nightclubs, and theaters that the celebrities go to.
  • Click-To-Call feature to set up reservations or obtain info at the celebrity hotspots.
  • Get satellite views of your favorite celebrity’s home if you can’t see it in person.
  • An extended tutorial to get you familiar with all the features in the app.
  • Help feature for quick reference.

And the developer states, and I agree with this “Always remember that these are people’s homes. Treat them with the same respect you would want shown for your own property. Do not do not disturb the occupants, and do not trespass on their property.”

Just released this morning… It’s the sensational return of YETISPORTS! And this time it’s a Christmas-themes game with YETISPORTS XMAS. The developer says that this game “will help you endure boring family celebrations during Christmas time.” I think it just might do that too! I’ve played all of the Flash versions of the YETISPORTS games, but have yet to purchase the YETISPORTS 1 game.

yetisports_xmas

In YETISPORTS XMAS you need to get Yeti to place candy canes at just the right intervals for Pengu to climb up the ice wall. The catch is that you need to have Yeti jump up into the air while throwing the candy canes. You need good timing, even though Yeti has an unlimited number of candy canes to use, it’s harder than it sounds.

If you enjoy any of the YETISPORTS games & apps, you need this for your app collection! It’s only $0.99 from the App Store.

I’m surprised that I didn’t see this mentioned from any of the zombie people I follow Twitter last wee. Well, in case you missed it, which you most likely did, a new app called Night of the Living Dead by LoL Software was released. It’s based off of the quintessential zombie film ever made, 1968′s Night of the Living Dead by the Great George A. Romero. Can you tell I’m a fan of his from using “Great” in front of his name?

This app will play the full length original version of the movie (the app is 321 MB in size). Not sure if it’s straight through or if it’s broken up into different chapters, like a DVD. The app also includes an extensive essay on the “History of Film”, current film reviews & news feed (updated regularly), and links to other LoL Software apps.

From the screenshots the app looks pretty nice. I’m sure that the video is pretty good since it appears that the movie is loaded onto your iPhone in the app. For $0.99 from the App Store it’s a bargain if you don’t already own the movie on DVD, in which case you can probably somehow put it on your iPhone anyway..

Here is another bunch of interesting looking adult apps for your iPhone I spotted today while going through AppShopper.com…

Are you ready for this?

MILFs – $0.99
“A large photo collection of the hottest moms out there.” They say there’s 12 pages of sexy MILFs. It’s made by the same developer as Boobs² that I mentioned last week, so you can send in your own MILF pics for the app.

Sex Magic – $0.99
“Learn a new skill or fun party trick that could help increase your sex appeal and let your partner know what you really want…” Ummmm, yeah.

Boobylicious – $0.99
From the developers that brought you Bootylicious, it’s Boobylicious! Pictures of women with nice breasts, covered up, of course. The dev asks if you’re a boob guy and says that this features “the most delicious boobs on the planet.” Amazingly the app already as 32 5-star ratings. I smell something dirty here. Maybe it’s coming from Bootylicious’ rear end?

Want a real review & rating, then send me a promo code. Fuck if I’m going to actually pay a buck for any of these porn apps I mention. I get free porn from the web.

Dog Park by Dogster.com. It’s a virtual dog park for the iPhone or iPod Touch (wi-fi needed for iPod Touch). Social media for your dog. Although it’s a cute little app, there’s not much to it. See other dogs that are online, nearest, or favorites. You can see who’s in the Dog Park, chat with other people (unlimited text messaging), earn virtual currency (dog bones) to buy gifts, send picture messages to other dog owners and manage your tiny profile for your dog.

Dog Park by Dogster.com

Dog Park by Dogster.com is a nicely designed app, but like I said, there’s really not much to it at all, which is disappointing. They have these “friend codes” all over the app. You need them to send dog bones to others and to friend others, but I don’t see friend codes in the app itself. No clue of what my friend code is. Another downside to this app is that it’s no way tied to Dogster.com profiles. I really think that would be a big asset to this app.

Dog Park by Dogster.com is free from the App Store, so it’s worth it to check it out.

Overall, this app is nice, but a disappointment if you’re trying to get your dog into mobile social media. I have heard the Facebook app “Dog Book” is working on an iPhone app. I’m very interested in seeing that.

I noticed these three “gems” today while going through AppShopper.com. I’m still amazed at Apple’s app review procedures. Sometimes little stupid issues get blocked and other times they let the ridiculous through. You can make up your own mind on which categories these three fall into.

Sex Shake – $0.99
Don’t know which sexual position to use, there’s an app for that! Looks like UrbanSpoon, but for sexual positions.

Boobs² – $0.99
See pictures of women with big boobs because there’s an app for that too. You can even email pictures to the developer to be included in future updates.

Adult: Boobs and Butts -$0.99
An iPhone app with pictures of women with nice boobs and butts.

Want a real review on one of these apps, flip me a promo code.
